Conricus said that, in Thursday's attack, around 20 projectiles, most likely rockets, were fired by the Quds Force, an external arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, at around 12.10 a.m.

Lieberman said Israel hit "almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria". "They should understand that if we get rain, they will get a flood".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks in Moscow on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin with Syria and President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal at the heart of their discussions. "We do not know yet the (Iranian) casualty count", he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, there were reports of loud explosions at a military base in the area.

Europe is already reeling from Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, which threatens European businesses who now face United States sanctions if they continue trading with Tehran.

France urged Iran on Thursday to refrain from all "military provocation" and cautioned it against "all temptations for regional hegemony".

Conricus, the Israeli military spokesman, said the military focused on inflicting "long-term damage on the Iranian military establishment in Syria" and assessed "it will take a substantial time to replenish".

It is a major ally of Syria and has deployed hundreds of troops to the country. He said Syria has the right to defend itself "against the aggressors". Israel regards Iran as its biggest threat and has repeatedly targeted Iranian forces and allied militia in Syria. Israel fired back on Thursday, hitting dozens of Iranian targets in Syria.
