Iran: Israeli missile strikes on Syria 'blatant violation' of sovereignty

Fox News quoting Western sources said an Iranian military base in Syria was the target of the attack

"They will never abandon the USA for us", said Poormoslem, a housewife at the rally.

But Abolfazl Hassan Beige, a member of Iran's parliamentary national security committee, accused Israel of "lying" about the strikes, denying any Iranian involvement in Wednesday's alleged missile attack in the Golan Heights.

US President Donald Trump's abandonment on Tuesday of a landmark worldwide deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme - an agreement fiercely opposed by Mr Netanyahu - has certainly raised tensions.

Israel claims it struck dozens of Iranian targets inside Syria early on Thursday in response to a salvo of rockets fired by Iranian forces into the occupied Golan Heights.

Shortly afterwards, Iran launched 30 missiles at Israel, and at least one of them was aimed at the city of Safed in the northern Galilee.

Ahmad Khatami, Leader of the Friday Prayer, vowed Iran would turn "Tel Aviv and Haifa to dust" if attacked by Israel. Israel occupied most of the area in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed it in a move not recognised internationally.

The extent of the damage inflicted by the Israeli airstrikes was not immediately clear. It said the overnight Israeli airstrikes killed three people.

The White House said, "The Iranian regime's deployment into Syria of offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel is an unacceptable and highly unsafe development for the entire Middle East".

Israel said it attacked Iranian intelligence facilities and logistics compounds, a military base and other posts, as well as munition storage warehouses of the Quds forces at Damascus global airport.

Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, called for a UN condemnation of Iran's "acts of aggression" and for the Security Council to "demand that Iran remove its military presence from Syria".

"Israel runs the risk, by doing what it did, that Iran will feel nearly obliged and forced to retaliate again". He says Israeli attacks on Syria under "fabricated and baseless excuses" is a breach of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. It said half the missiles were shot down. "Whatever happens in Syria happens under the command of the Syrians", said analyst Mohammad Marandi, who was part of Iran's negotiation team leading up to the nuclear deal. "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran had "crossed a red line" in launching the attack and warned against any escalation of the conflict.

"It was ordered and commanded by Qassem Soleimani and it has not achieved its objective", IDF spokesman Lieutenant-General Jonathan Conricus told reporters, referring to the third Iranian attempt to strike targets in Israel.

Russian Federation backed up the Syrian military's claims, saying approximately half of the incoming Israeli missiles had been intercepted by Syrian air defenses.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow sees Thursday's strikes as a "very alarming development".

Netanyahu's office said he expressed his appreciation for May's position. But Israel and Russian Federation have maintained close communications to prevent their air forces from coming into conflict.

Syrian and Iranian military facilities in the war-torn country have been hit several times since April.

The European Union on Thursday backed Israel's right to defend itself and called on "all regional actors to show restraint" after widespread strikes against Iranian targets in Syria, in response to Iranian rockets fired towards the Golan Heights. Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, said four of the rockets were intercepted, while the others fell short of their targets.

Sirens blasted in Golan Heights during the attack and the IDF told residents to stay in the bomb shelters.

Yahya Al-Aridi, a Syrian opposition spokesman, told Arab News that Iran lives off its hostility toward Israel and the US.
