Kaspersky Lab to shift U.S. customer data from Russian Federation to Switzerland

The move is part of Kaspersky Lab's transparency initiative that was announced in September.

"To ensure full transparency and integrity, Kaspersky Lab is arranging for this activity to be supervised by an independent third party, also based in Switzerland", it added.

Software produced by Kaspersky has already been banned from U.S. government systems, and the company has been on a mission to prove that Russian Federation is not spying on other countries via its antivirus tools.

By the end of 2019, Kaspersky Lab hopes to have moved the infrastructure used for United States customer data storage and processing to Zurich.

The company says: "We are relocating a good part of our infrastructure to Zurich, Switzerland, including the "software assembly line" and servers that store and process Kaspersky Security Network data, and creating our very first Transparency Center".

Customer data storage and processing, software assembly and threat detection updates will all be handled in Switzerland, with an independent third party supervising the work.

Kaspersky Security Network is the cloud-based system through which Kaspersky collects data from the computers of its business customers, in order to spot and combat threats.

Reuters first reported the plans in March, citing company documents which said Kaspersky Lab was setting up the centre in response to moves in the United States, Britain and Lithuania previous year to stop using the company's products.

The move follows controversy in the United States previous year when the federal government removed Kaspersky from its list of approved vendors, weeks after senior U.S. intelligence agency and law enforcement officials expressed concerns about the safety of its software.

Kaspersky Lab also plans to open similar centres in North America and Asia by 2020.

The new measures are the next steps in the development of the initiative, but they also reflect the company's commitment to working with others to address the growing challenges of industry fragmentation and a breakdown of trust, the company said.

Kaspersky Lab chief executive Eugene Kaspersky said: "In a rapidly changing industry such as ours, we have to adapt to the evolving needs of our clients, stakeholders and partners".

As well as data on Western customers plus those in Singapore, Japan and South Korea, the facility will host a "software build conveyer" - tools used to assemble ready-to-use software out of source code.

"This approach will further show that generation after generation of Kaspersky Lab products were built and used for one objective only: protecting the company's customers from cyber threats", the company statement said. "We believe these two qualities make Switzerland the flawless place to move part of our sensitive infrastructure".

"We believe such action will become a global trend for cyber security, and that a policy of trust will catch on across the industry as a key basic requirement".
