FIFA World Cup 2018: Germany announce 27-man squad; Gotze, Can, Mustafi dropped

Liverpool's Emre Can has been left out of Germany's provisional 27-man squad for the World Cup, while Manuel Neuer is included.

Low, however, has included the Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer despite has not featured since September were he suffered a foot injury.

World Cup-winning goalscorer Mario Gotze has been left out of Germany's squad for June's tournament in Russian Federation. I think Mario has wonderful quality.

"Marco is a special weapon and has a lot of strong attributes - speed, instinct, feeling for the spaces, game intelligence".

Borussia Dortmund's midfielder Goetze, who scored the victor against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final, will miss the tournament in Russian Federation due to poor performances in the past season.

"He is alert right from the first moment when he goes on the pitch", Loew said.

They face Sweden in Sochi six days later before rounding off their Group F campaign against South Korea in Kazan.

Oliver Bierhoff, the national team general manager, is also extending his deal, to 2024, along with assistant Marcus Sorg.

"Manuel is getting back into full training this week at Bayern Munich, that assures us that he can tolerate the full load in the training camp", explained Loew.

Low also opted to stick with the experienced Mario Gomez as his second-choice striker behind Timo Werner and picked Freiburg's Nils Petersen ahead of Sandro Wagner. "We want to see him play the way he did at the European Championship (in 2012)", he said.

Even if Neuer fails to return to fitness in time to make the World Cup, Germany have Barcelona No. 1 Marc-Andre ter Stegen to call upon instead.
