Lebanese Politician Says Strikes Warned Israel

Iran's foreign ministry condemned the attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran had "crossed a red line" in launching the attack and warned against any escalation of the conflict. The army shot down ten Israeli missiles. The Israeli strike was aimed at an arms depot belonging to Hezbollah and the Iranians, according to the United Kingdom -based opposition monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It's the best way forward to guarantee what the JCPOA has failed to do: stop Iran from ever acquiring nuclear weapons and protect the American people and our allies from the world's leading state sponsor of terror.

Israel annexed the Golan Heights in 1981 after capturing it from Syria in the Six Day War in 1967. The Harry S Truman carrier strike group on May 3, began air operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, conducting flight operations against ISIS targets in Syria.

This chimes with statements by Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who refers to Israel as a "cancerous tumour" that should be cut out of the Middle East.

These are the first skirmishes in a potential war between Israel and Iran that promises a fearful level of destruction - even by the standards of the modern Middle East.

ROSS: And for Israel, I think it's, on the one hand, the Israelis obviously have felt that the JCPOA was fundamentally flawed.

Israel regards Iran as its biggest threat and has repeatedly targeted Iranian forces and allied militia in Syria.

Tehran, for its part, has yet to officially react to the strikes. It was not immediately clear if any Iranians were among the dead.

He added that Syria has the right to defend itself "against the aggressors".

A report in The Jerusalem Post says "Israel struck 50 Iranian targets in Syria after 20 rockets were fired towards Israel".

Israel on Thursday said it had attacked dozens of Iranian military installations in Syria in what the military described as the most extensive strike in the neighboring country in decades. Israel accuses Tehran of seeking to establish a foothold on its doorstep, something it has vowed never to allow.

"We will expand our missile capabilities despite Western pressure.to let Israel know that if it acts foolishly, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", he said in remarks during Friday prayers that were carried on Iranian state television.

The reason I say it may not yet be a war is because the Iranians at this point, I think, are quite keen on consolidating their position within Syria, and they're not really interested in getting into a full-scale conflict with Israel at this stage.

"If there is rain on our side, there will be a flood on their side", Lieberman stated. The problem, however, is that the Iranians are basically determined to build in Syria what they have produced in Lebanon with Hezbollah and 120,000 rockets.

Iranian state television announced the Israeli strikes, sourcing the information to Syria's state-run SANA news agency, and described the Israeli attack as "unprecedented".
