Last week, Schneiderman abruptly resigned amid claims he physically abused women he dated.

Sixteen candidates have lined up to finish out Eric Schneiderman's term through the end of the year as state attorney general, Politico reported. "I assure you that I can be that voice".

When it comes to who will replace Eric Schneiderman as New York State Attorney General, there are two processes taking place; who the legislature will appoint in a process which begins Tuesday in the Democrat-led Assembly, and who will pursue and eventually assume the role through election in November. "An Acting Attorney General not appointed by the legislature has no authority to take an official action such as seeking an indictment from a grand jury".

"I think all that will help me do this job", Underwood said.

Underwood said she has no plans to run for attorney general in November, which she said makes her a better option for the position now during the interim period.

Eleven others are asking to be named interim attorney general.

"It's time to put people ahead of politics, and ultimately let the voters decide who their next attorney general will be", Flanagan said in a statement.

Thomas Abinanti, the next applicant whom the committee considered Tuesday, joked that the room had already cleared out, and that the state "could do a lot worse" than Underwood. One of these, Nicole Gueron, is a founding partner at Clarick Gueron Reisbaum LLP. Schneiderman himself won over the office in 2010 only when Andrew Cuomo left to run for governor.

Another applicant, Elizabeth Holtzman, is a former congresswoman who served on the House Judiciary Committee that oversaw the impeachment of President Richard Nixon and co-founded the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues in 1977. After today's session, the interview process is expected to continue at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
