Lewis Hamilton rejuvenated by Spain F1 victory but wary of Monaco GP

With AP Photos.Mercedes got the commanding victory it had been seeking all season when Lewis Hamilton put on a strong performance at the Spanish Grand Prix.

It was a race where Mercedes had no answer to Ferrari and Vettel's challenge in 2017, ending a run of four successive Monaco wins for the team.

Despite the early problems this season, Mercedes will arrive in Monaco with Hamilton leading the drivers' standings by 17 points over Vettel.

"Obviously we don't want to lose him and I don't think he wants to go anywhere else", Wolff said.

"But we know that this was a good circuit for us and the temperatures fell in our favor as well". This is the type of race that reminds spectators and drivers alike that Hamilton still has unrivaled pace.

Hamilton failed to win any of the first three races of the 2018 campaign, finishing 2nd to Vettel in Australia, third to Vettel and Bottas in Bahrain, and he finished outside of the podium places in fourth in China, where Daniel Ricciardo took the spoils.

We've seen the wings get bigger, smaller, wider, higher, lower and a combination of all of these, but the feeling coming out of the F1 technical camp is that this time the changes proposed have been better researched than anytime before. We have had other priorities in the last few weeks. "So, we need to stay calm and humble, because it can be a different ball game again next time round". One, we were not quick enough and if we are not able to see then we are more than blind. "We just need to continue like that, and for me also the wins will come".

"It was a very easy one-stop here and the tyres were very very similar but we have already spoken to Charlie [Whiting]", he said.

The slow-speed nature of the most famous race on the F1 calendar is one which played into Ferrari's hands last term as Vettel led Kimi Raikkonen home in a one-two finish.

Giovinazzi will be joined in the Sauber C37 by Charles Leclerc, while Haas' Romain Grosjean will be the first out for the American team - they are yet to confirm their Wednesday driver. After that I was really surprised they didn't have the pace to keep up with me.

"We are not far from finalising things".

By contrast, the track at Barcelona is much better suited to the W09 - as today's dominant performance from Lewis Hamilton demonstrated. The Red Bull cars of Verstappen and Ricciardo kept out of trouble just behind them.

Renault, meanwhile, will use current F1 star Carlos Sainz on the opening day, and 24 hours later British-Korean Jack Aitken, racing in F2 with ART Grand Prix this year, will get his first taste of contemporary F1 machinery.

Valtteri Bottas delivered the result that was expected of him today.
