Man Found Crushed by Rock After Vesuvius Eruption

The 35-year-old victim was seemingly beheaded by a hurtling stone that also crushed his thorax, experts claim.

Archaeologists working at the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, found the man's remains from A.D. 79.

A man who fled the first eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, was crushed by a large block of stone almost 2,000 years ago. Excavations later revealed an extraordinarily detailed image of what life was like at that time.

The skeleton is believed to belong to a man over 30-years-old with a bone infection who had trouble walking.

Lava and boiling rocks from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD killed at least 1300 people in Italy's Pompeii - but none surely in a more freaky way than this victim.

The archaeological site's general director, Massimo Osanna, called it "an exceptional find", that contributes to a better "picture of the history and civilization of the age".

Anthropologist Valeria Amoretti brushes dust off the unlucky victim.

A large stone block, possibly a door jamb from the upper level of the building, dragged by the heavy ash cloud, hit the top half of his body and crushed the upper part of his chest and head, which have not yet been unearthed.

Apart from the "emotional impact" of these discoveries, they allow archaeologists to study the people of the city, and even how they tried to escape the eruption of Vesuvius. Archaeologists have not yet found the victim's skull.

Pyroclastic flows or clouds are currents of hot gas and plenty of solid material that flow out from an erupting volcano, at speeds of up to 700 km/h. The malady may explain why he was unable to escape in the wake of the eruption's early warning signals.
