Five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy later, Carrick will retire from the game at the end of the season, but not before showing why he was a constant presence at one of the world's biggest clubs.

Michael Carrick bid farewell to Old Trafford by helping to set up Manchester United's only goal in a 1-0 win over Watford in the Premier League finale on Sunday.

Peter Crouch has defended Jose Mourinho amid continued criticism of Manchester United's style this season.

Explaining his vision for next term, the Portuguese said: "Moving forward I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn't exist".

"I am going to have assistant coaches, I am going to have fitness coaches and a structure where they have specialists in different areas connected to the performance".

So farewell Michael Carrick, and thanks for the 50-yard pass to add to the memories.

"On behalf of myself I would like to say thank you for your support over the years, I've got a lot of memories to cherish". It's an incredible place to play football.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal after 34 minutes, tapping in after Carrick's superb long pass had played Juan Mata in behind the Hornets defence.

In stark contrast, their FA Cup final opponents Chelsea had a torrid time at St. James' Park, losing 3-0 to Newcastle United as their top four hopes fell apart.

"Not true, he's injured", the United manager said of Martial.

But Romelu Lukaku has handed manager Jose Mourinho a timely boost ahead of the Wembley showpiece with the Belgium striker due to return to training on Tuesday following an ankle injury sustained a fortnight ago. Managerial changes have left the side unsure, and with only one win in the last nine games of the season, questions have to be asked about the side's mentality.

Mourinho said earlier in the week that Martial would start against Watford but the Frenchman was absent. However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life.
