Many would have expected a better display from Chelsea in the second half but that was not the case as Ayoze Perez struck twice in the 59th and 63rd minute to help Chelsea sign off the season on a blistering note.

Ashley has now released another statement, without word from Benitez, echoing his earlier support of the manager and his stance when it comes to investment.

"I thought I had a chance of sneaking into the friendly games but I didn't", he said.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was far from impressed...

Ashley has admitted he can not afford to give his manager the kind of funds he would need to take the club to the next level and put the business up for sale in October previous year as a result.

Benitez remains to be unclear how a lot he can spend in the summertime and whether or not he might want to consider mortgage targets or whether or not the membership will make important everlasting signings after retaining their Premier League standing.

"If he can do that with that squad...could you imagine what he could do with some backing and some finance".

Diame was excellent: making six tackles, four interceptions and winning the ball back 11 times.

CHRISTIAN ATSU: The former Chelsea man's knee injury is a little more serious.

"Jonjo Shelvey controlled the midfield. We have to give credit to our players".

Following a successful first season back in the Premier League under Rafael Benitez, Newcastle fans will be incredibly keen to see the Spanish manager stay with the club and continue to develop their side. I would also like to applaud the players, led fantastically by the captain Jamaal Lascelles.

"I said before the game it is not about finishing 10th".

"I think Rafa sees similarities between Newcastle and Liverpool, in the town and the fans".

Benitez praised the supporters for getting behind the team this season, and in particular on Sunday as Newcastle started with a high tempo to dismantle Chelsea.
