Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane, told presspersons that it was still unclear whether the patient was suffering from Nipah disease and that they would get clarity once test results are verified at the National Institute of Virology in Pune.

Chief Surveillance Officer, Directorate of Health Services, Dr Utkarsh Betodkar, said that the patient was travelling alone on a train from Kerala but took ill when he reached Tivim railway station. In the Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, local media has reported almost 200 patients receiving hospital treatment.

Taking to Twitter, Vij said, "Rahul Gandhi is similar to Nipah Virus". He was reported saying the media that there are no more cases of Nipah virus in Tamil Nadu. The patient's identity was not disclosed by GMCH.

Dr Nosa Aihie, medical director for the Mena area at International SOS, a company of experts in global health issues, said: "Our current assessment is that there is no risk of the Nipah virus spreading to the UAE".
