In Santa Fe, some students were more interested in that idea, with 18-year-old Kassidy Monroe saying, "In some cases arming teachers may help". Victims of the Santa Fe massacre and other recent Texas shootings in Sutherland Springs, Alpine and Italy have also been invited to the talks, according to the release.

"We hope that this will be the first of many productive meetings and discussions that will lead to meaningful improvements in Texas law and reduce gun violence in the state", he said.

"There's nothing wrong with reasonable, pragmatic (gun) restrictions", Sylvester Turner said at a news conference.

All three students were arrested.

Reese Tisdale, a police detective and the son of victim Cynthia Tisdale, said in a statement read by a spokeswoman that his mother worked as a substitute teacher "for the love of teaching and helping others".
