Peru captain Guerrero to miss World Cup due to drugs ban

Captain of the Peruvian national team Paolo Guerrero will be ineligible for this summer's FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation after having his ban for a doping violation partially upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He arrived at a CAS hearing last week flanked by lawyers to be met by around 30 flag-waving well-wishers and supporters shouting "You can do it, Paolo!"

Guerrero, who has denied wrongdoing, had just completed a six-month ban imposed by global soccer body Federation Internationale de Football Association after he tested positive for cocaine following a World Cup qualifier away to Argentina in October.

Announcing the extension of the ban now ending in January 2019, CAS said it was the most appropriate course of action considering Guerrero's degree of fault in the matter.

Guerrero was subjected to an emotional roller-coaster after testing positive following the 0-0 draw in a qualifier away to Argentina in October.

The Dutch-based union pointed out the CAS itself had accepted that Peru's all-time leading scorer did not intend to enhance performance and had not knowingly ingested the substance.

Peru, who have made it to the World Cup qualification for the first time since dating way back in 1982, will be playing the group stage round with Australia, Denmark and France in Group C in Russian Federation.

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero will miss this summer's World Cup through suspension.

Having completed the suspension and played two matches for his club Flamengo, Guerrero was handed the extended ban by CAS on Monday.

The player and his representatives have claimed he was not taking any drug and was accidentally consumed through tea, according to AS.

He has scored 32 goals in 83 appearances and is a galvanising presence for his team.

This is the second ruling by CAS that has a huge impact on Peru's 2018 World Cup journey.

"However, the panel considered that the player did bear some fault or negligence, even if it was not significant, and that he could have taken some measures to prevent him from committing the (doping violations)", the court said.
