Primary Election 2018: Voter's guide

First District Republican Congressman Don Bacon will face Democratic primary victor Kara Eastman in the general election. The race was among the highest-profile contests in Nebraska's primary election. Krist held off two other candidates to win the Democratic nomination.

Here's a breakdown of the races. Raybould emerged from a field of four candidates to win the Democratic nomination.

Eastman, a social worker who runs the nonprofit Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, cast herself as a progressive alternative to the centrist Ashford, who also has been registered as a Republican and independent.

A first-time candidate, Eastman said she was inspired to run for Congress by her mother's battle with cancer and the extremely costly prescription drugs that she struggled to afford.

By contrast, Ashford's supporters had sought to frame him as a consensus-builder with the experience needed to get things done in Washington for his home district.

The district encompasses Omaha and parts of the city's suburbs. They've both beaten Brad Ashford.

Lincoln City Councilwoman Jane Raybould won the Democratic primary to try and unseat Republican Sen. Deb Fischer this fall.

Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor has become the first holder of the office to lose in a primary election. She was the best-financed Democrat in the race.

Libertarian Jim Schultz ran unopposed for his party's nomination.

He now faces state Sen. Krist is a former Republican who joined the Democratic Party earlier this year.

Ricketts defeated Krystal Gabel of Omaha, a technical writer who advocates for medical marijuana and industrial hemp. Bob Krist, university instructor Tyler Davis and community activist Vanessa Ward, all of Omaha. Smith won yesterday's Republican primary with 66-percent of the vote and will take on Democrat Paul Theobald in November.

Murante defeated Taylor Royal, a certified public accountant from Omaha.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts is touting his conservative credentials on the national stage as he prepares for re-election.

Royal, who ran unsuccessfully for Omaha mayor a year ago, pointed to his experience as a financial adviser and accountant as a plus for the job.

The polls have closed in a Nebraska primary election that will set up races for U.S. Senate, governor and the U.S. House.

Eastman will face the incumbent, Republican Don Bacon, in the general election in November.

Key primaries in Nebraska's congressional districts remained too close to call at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
