Roberto Mancini outlined his plans to take Italy back to the top and recall maverick forward Mario Balotelli to the line-up after he was presented as their new coach on Tuesday.

Mancini had shown an early interest in taking over the national side and was ready to sever his lucrative contract with Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Mancini replaces Gian Piero Ventura, who was sacked in November after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades.

Balotelli has not played for Italy since the 2014 World Cup, but he featured under Mancini at Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Four-times world champions Italy are at an all time low of 20th in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings after losing to 1-0 on aggregate to Sweden in a playoff for a place in Russia.

During his 10-year worldwide player Mancini was never became a regular in the Italian national side and has won 36 caps scoring only four goals. Carlo Ancelotti appeared to be the number one choice for the role, however the former Bayern boss reportedly turned down the opportunity to take the job due to an apparent dislike for some of the internal politics within the Italian FA. Same too with former Italy manager Antonio Conte, who may lose his Chelsea appointment this summer.

Sky Sports Italia reported yesterday that Mancini has now agreed a two-year deal and will sign a contract in Rome today.

The Italian is most well-known for helping Manchester City to the 2011-2012 Premier League. He also won Italian Cups with Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio.

Roberto Mancini for the first time in his career he headed the national team.
