Russian man arrested for vandalising painting depicting Ivan the Terrible

Russian police on Saturday said they arrested a man for vandalising one of the best known works of 19th century painter Ilya Repin, depicting Ivan the bad killing his son, at a gallery in Moscow. Authorities said the man grew "disturbed" by the painting after drinking vodka in the on-site cafe.

The protective glass broke and the work of art "suffered serious damage", the Tretyakov Gallery said in a statement.

"The incident was very bad and frightening and speaks to the aggression which reigns in society", she said Monday.

The painting, "Ivan the bad and His Son Ivan on November 16, 1581", was created by Ilya Repin, one of Russia's most famous 19th century artists, and housed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Ivan the bad and His Son painting, a masterpiece by Russian realist painter Ilya Repin, will be exhibited in a bullet-proof glass case after it is repaired following an attack. This statement was made Deputy Chairman of the financial institutions Stanislav Kuznetsov.

Police in Russia have arrested a man on charges of vandalizing a famous painting by renowned Russian artist Ilya Repin in Moscow.

"The painting is badly damaged, the canvas is ripped in three places in the central part".

She told journalists museum staff heard him "say something about how Ivan the awful did not kill his son". The original frame of the painting was also seriously damaged after the glass fell.

The painting, which will be protected by a bulletproof case after being restored, has never been valued because it has never been lent out, but another work by Repin was sold for over $7 million in 2011.

"Three years is nothing compared to the value of this painting", Aristarkhov added.

Some reports of the incident claim that the attacker was compelled by feelings that the painting was slanderous and inaccurate. On January 16, 1913, Abram Balashov, a 29-year-old icon painter and Old Believer, took a knife and slashed the painting three times. Repin himself participated then in the restoration of the painting, the gallery said in its statement.

In 2016, Russian Federation inaugurated a controversial monument to the 16th-century tyrant, the first of its kind, in the city of Oryol some 330 kilometres (200 miles) south of Moscow.
