The fashion statement. The cries of "Come on!"

She also struggled to read her opponent's swinging lefty serve - a major factor in Pliskova's tally of 15 aces.

An error-strewn game from Serena saw her broken at 3-3, but she broke right back and held to love consolidating at 5-3.

And, yes, the victory.

"I had a lot of problems with my blood clots - and God I don't know how many I've had over the past 12 months - so there's definitely a little bit of functionality to it".

"I'm so glad to win a match here and I'm taking it one day at a time".

While Australia's men were put to shame as all seven crashed out of their first round singles matchups, Barty lived up to her first-time seeding at Roland Garros with a thumping 6-3 6-1 victory over Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva on Wednesday morning (AEST).

After the match, Williams spoke about life as a working mother.

She won 80% of her first serve points. Next came a doubles match with older sister Venus for the US Fed Cup team in February.

Williams is the only woman in the draw who features in her own HBO documentary series, Being Serena, and yesterday she more than justified her billing.

"I call it like my Wakanda-inspired cat suit", Williams said, in a reference to the blockbuster movie Black Panther.

Williams stretches for a backhand.

And though Williams isn't technically a royal, posters advertising the French Open displayed a photo of her with the announcement, "The Queen is Back".

Pliskova and Williams shake hands after the match. After the two were tied at 6 in the first set, Williams fell behind 3-0 in the tiebreaker but rallied to win 7-4 and hollered in triumph several times.

There are no artificial lights at Roland Garros and organizers figured there might not be enough sunlight to get the women's match started, let alone finished, on Tuesday.

From there, it took Nadal three match points to finish, reaching the second round when Bolelli missed a forehand.

Whatever happens over the next two weeks, Williams insists her family priorities have eased the expectations on her as a player. In 2016, Nadal withdrew with an injured left wrist after a pair of easy victories, then claimed every set he played past year en route to the trophy.

Jordan Thompson lost to Casper Ruud in a five-set thriller, young-gun Alex de Minaur went down to Britain's Kyle Edmund in three sets, and James Duckworth was convincingly beaten by no. 3 seed Marin Cilic.

To mark her big return, the tennis star, who beat Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the first round of the 2018 French Open, wore a black bodysuit fit for a superhero.

It's hard to deny that an athlete who's won 23 Grand Slam titles is pretty much invincible.
