Serena Williams Wins in Her Return to the French Open

Williams was taken to a tie-break in the opening set by the big-serving Pliskova, with the scoreline eventually 7-4 in her favour.

Dressed in a skintight, all-in-one black bodysuit, broken up by a vivid scarlet belt, Serena captivated the French crowd from the start of the contest to its 7-6 (4) 6-4 conclusion.

After beating Williams in the 2016 final, Muguruza's title defense was ended in the fourth round previous year.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is playing in her first major championship since the 2017 Australian Open.

"I am just so happy to have won a match here. thank you all".

World number one Simona Halep will start her latest bid for an elusive Grand Slam title against Alison Riske of the US.

It was Sharapova's first win at the French Open since 2015 after she served a drug ban in 2016 and was not granted a wild card a year ago.

It called to mind Williams' black "catsuit" that she wore at the 2002 U.S. Open.

Williams then took another break to work on her game, and that absence of more than two months ended Tuesday.

"This conversation was not on the table previous year when I was coming back and I was not seeded in Wimbledon", the Belarusian said after her first-round loss to Katerina Siniakova on Monday.

Williams will place the No17 seed, Australia's Ashleigh Barty, in the second round. She is back with her old coach Thomas Hogstedt and she has won grand slams with him before.

"I don't know how many aces there were", Serena smiled courtside after the match.

French Open organizers stick rigidly to the WTA rankings, so would not seed Serena.
