Singapore Airliines launches world's longest flights

The Singapore Airlines on Wednesday said the airline would launch the world's longest non-stop commercial flights from Singapore to New York City in October, with the flying time totaling up to 18 hours 45 minutes. There is, however, no room for hoi polloi.

With the new Singapore-Newark service, there will be 72 weekly passenger services between Changi Airport and the United States, said CAG.

SINGAPORE-Singapore Airlines Ltd. will resume nonstop flights to Newark Liberty International Airport from its home airport in October, using the latest Airbus SE A350 jets.

The 8,277 nautical mile (15,329 kilometer) flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey with 161 business class and premium economy seats will eclipse the 7,843 nautical mile Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Auckland as the world's longest, according to airline data provider OAG.

Flights will begin on 11 October and the route will initially be served three times a week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, before daily operations get underway a week later.

Singapore Airlines is the launch customer for the plane, with seven on order from Airbus. Singapore Airlines said the routes were discontinued because the aircraft used had been returned to its maker Airbus as part of a deal.

Super long-haul flights are becoming more frequent with aircraft efficiency keeping costs down, and the airlines able to charge a premium over flights which include a stop-off. Tickets will be made available for sale progressively across booking channels, starting from Thursday. "The flights will offer our customers the fastest way to travel between the two cities - in great comfort, together with SIA's legendary service - and will help boost connectivity to and through the Singapore hub". A non-stop flight between Singapore and Los Angeles will also be launched later this year.

Singapore now has 21 A350s in its fleet with 46 more on order, including seven of the ULR long-range version.

Singapore Airlines now serves New York JFK daily via Frankfurt. The first A350-900ULR is due for delivery in September, with all seven due for delivery by the end of the year.

In comparison, the Perth-London direct flight is about 14,400km.
