Children Threatened By Ebola Outbreak In DRC

Bikoro Hospital director Dr Serge Ngalebato said he and other health officials were vaccinated for protection when treating Ebola patients.

Health workers have identified people who have been in contact with confirmed Ebola cases in three areas in Equateur province, the rural areas of Bikoro and Iboko and Mdbandaka, the provincial capital of 1.2 million that is a transport hub on the Congo River.

Ebola vaccinations will begin Monday in the two rural areas of Congo where the latest deadly outbreak was declared this month, the health ministry said Saturday, as the number of confirmed Ebola cases rose to 35, including 10 deaths. "May God protect us in any case", Grace Ekofo, a 23-year-old student in Kinshasa, told The Associated Press.

In the DRC, ALIMA continues to support the Ministry of Health to provide quality medical and nutritional care to local populations, in particular in the Kasai Region, where conflict and insecurity have led to the deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

In one of the more alarming developments in the outbreak to date, family members of two Ebola patients removed them from an isolation ward in Mbandaka on Monday night, walking them out of the hospital before putting them on the back of motorcycles.

Amid worries of the spread of Ebola, several schools in the Iboko health zone, about 112 miles southeast of Mbandaka, have been closed, according to reports by Radio Okapi, a station backed by the United Nations.

One resident said that what they first thought were rumors were becoming reality with the death and that they were very scared to interact.

The statement said the deaths from the 2016 Ebola crisis in West Africa were directly caused by Ebola, but also indirectly caused by the collapsed health care system through the pandemic.

The U.N. children's agency said it was mobilizing hundreds of community workers to raise awareness on protection against the disease.

With more than twice as many Ebola outbreaks as any other country since the virus was discovered in 1976, Congolese are familiar with its destructive power, yet fear and suspicion of medical authorities are still hindering efforts at containment. Symptoms of Ebola include vomiting, fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, and external or internal bleeding.

The Ebola virus spreads through direct contact with either bodily fluids or objects contaminated by someone ill with the disease. Without preventive measures, the virus can spread quickly between people and is fatal in up to 90% of cases.
