Embattled Musk 'thoroughly reorganising' Tesla

A photo released by the South Jordan Police Department shows a traffic collision involving a Tesla Model S sedan with a Fire Department mechanic truck.

The Tesla vehicle was travelling at 60 miles per hour when it hit the mechanic truck, which was stopped for the light on the South Bangerter Highway in South Jordan, Utah at 6:38 pm MT, the police said. Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s self-driving unit, said on Sunday that Matthew Schwall had joined from Tesla, where he was its main technical contact with USA safety investigators.

While a Tesla spokesperson failed to comment following the accident, the company's co-founder Elon Musk took to Twitter to note that it was "super messed up" that the latest accident had garnered so much public attention, while accidents involving traditional cars "get nearly no coverage".

"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the ~40,000 people who died in USA auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", he said in a tweet.

Tesla has been dominating the news cycle as of late - and for all the wrong reasons.

Tesla co-founder Elon Musk has defended his company's driverless Autopilot feature after a woman broke her ankle in a crash while the system was active. The driver of the fire truck was evaluated for whiplash but was not checked into the hospital.

"What's actually awesome about this accident is that a Model S hit a fire truck at 60 m.p.h. and the driver only broke an ankle", he added.

In March, an Arizona pedestrian was killed by a self-driving Uber auto, in the first death of its kind. Two teens were later killed, a third injured, in a Florida crash in which their Model S sedan's battery pack caught fire after a crash. The 18 year-old driver slammed into a concrete wall, and the vehicle burst into flames, trapping the occupants inside. According to police Sergeant Sam Winkler of the police Department of the city of South George, the result of the accident were crumpled front part for electric vehicle and only a broken leg for the driver.

"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the ~40,000 people who died in U.S. auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", he tweeted.

Waymo, Google's self-driving vehicle spinoff, confirmed that Matthew Schwall had joined the company. In one instance, a Model X operating in Autopilot mode crashed into a California freeway barrier, killing the driver. "Approx 4X better than avg", Musk said.

In any case, the National Transportation Safety Board and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have taken an interest in the recent accidents to determine if the technology is being rolled out safely. "A system that, on balance, saves lives and reduces injuries should be released".
