The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL won’t settle the notch war

Leaked Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL screen protectors confirm notch and stereo speakers

Over the weekend, Android sites were buzzing about a smartphone screen-protector leak from the depths of China's Twitter-like Weibo social media service.

What do you think of this new report?

First up: the manufacturing news. The upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will come with a better design, with the larger variant expected to sport a almost edge-to-edge screen, except for a thicker bezel known as a chin at the bottom of the phone.

The earlier launch window of August or September ties in with mutterings we've heard of an earlier launch event than the October 4th "Made by Google" event we've seen for the past two years. That deal only closed in January, so HTC's former team hasn't been around long enough to do a top-to-bottom in-house design, but they have apparently been around long enough to not need to involve an OEM like LG or HTC.

There is also a possibility that an under-screen fingerprint reader will be introduced on one of the phones, although this tech is allegedly still struggling in development. It does clone the iPhone X's notch though, which is something that hardcore Android fans haven't been happy about with regard to all the other recent phones that copy Apple's design. Citing "people familiar with the matter", Bloomberg also reports that the notch will hold two front-facing cameras. Interestingly, the report says there will still be only one camera on the back, even though there are now two in the front. Apple is planning a new low-priced iPhone, an update to the iPhone X size, and a larger phone with an about 6.5-inch screen for this year as well, Bloomberg News has reported.

The smaller Pixel 3 has a design that is somewhat dated thanks to those big bezels above and below the screen, but the Pixel 3 XL looks just as sleek as any other recent Android flagship phone. Verizon Wireless Inc., for the third year in a row, will be the exclusive USA carrier partner for the new Pixels, the people said. The screen protector also confirms that both the devices will be having stereo speakers in the front and will have smaller bezels.
