Tom Cruise tweets as cameras roll on Top Gun 2

"Cruise gave the sneak peek a simple caption, writing, "#Day1".

"It's going to be a competition film like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first", Cruise told Access Hollywood past year, with "the need for speed and big, fast machines". Oh, we feel it alright!

The image also references the 1986 film's popular catchphrase "feel the need".

Details about the sequel, which will be titled Top Gun: Maverick, have been shrouded in secrecy for years.

A follow-up to Tony Scott's 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

The original "Top Gun" was directed by Tony Scott, and Cruise's performance as Maverick remains one of the most iconic of his career. "Back then, they hadn't been in any war for 15 or 20 years at that point", he told ComingSoon.net in 2017. It's just a different world now, so you can't remake the first movie.

Over three decades after the original action film about jet fighter pilots roared into theaters, the long-discussed sequel looks to be formally underway as of Cruise's Twitter post (which we first spotted at CinemaBlend). "When he wasn't showboating in the sky, he was romancing Kelly McGillis" Charlie in the evenings, and crooning the Righteous Brothers alongside Anthony Edwards' Goose. On Wednesday (May 30), Cruise took to social media to share the first official picture from the set of Top Gun: Maverick.
