"Kasab was hanged in such haste, so that the Mumbai attacks could be used as a tool for Pakistan bashing across the world on political basis", he said.

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader and former diplomat Sherry Rehman on Sunday lambasted former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his remarks on 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

Without naming Nawaz Sharif, the official spokesperson said that the meeting was suggested "to discuss recent misleading media statement regarding Bombay incident". "Why can't we complete the trial", said Sharif.

Local newspapers were also critical of Sharif.

Mr Malik asked the PML-N supreme leader to withdraw his statement that created a false impression about Pakistan's role in the Mumbai attacks. We gave a sacrifice of more than 50,000 people.

Responding to a question, he said, "Kulbhushan Jadhav was a spy and I corroborate to the statement".

Sharif stoked a controversy on Saturday, admitting that Pakistan-based terrorists were involved in 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Sharif had travelled to India for the swearing-in ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also welcomed the latter in Lahore during a surprise trip in December 2015. Addressing on the occasion, Nawaz Sharif said that Government of PML-N has fulfilled promises made with the masses, record development work has been carried out in South Punjab.

"After all, it was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who, resisting all pressures, took the most important and most hard decision on national security in Pakistan's history by making the country a nuclear power in May 1998", he said.

On the campaign trail in Multan ahead of general elections expected in a few months, the three-time premier said: "Militant organisations are active". India's position has been that the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attack operated from Pakistan. Or the Lashkar-e-Taiba, which according to India, sailed into Mumbai from Karachi, to carry out the attacks in an operation that was coordinated by Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.

The PML-N leader was questioning why the trial into the Mumbai attacks was stalled at a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court.

The Mumbai attack case has entered into the 10th year but none of its suspects in Pakistan has been punished yet, showing that the case had never been in the priority list of the country that appears to be keen to put it under the carpet.

Islamabad, on the other hand, insists that New Delhi had not given "solid evidence" against Hafiz Saeed and others.

Or is one to presume that he was helpless because his government was working under the command of the Pakistan Army and the ISI?

The controversy erupted past year with the publication of 11.5 million secret documents from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca documenting the offshore dealings of numerous world's rich and powerful.

The 2016 Panama Papers leak also revealed that Sharif's family held millions of dollars worth of shares and property in companies in the United Kingdom, and around the world.

But the PML-N insists the wealth was acquired legally, through family businesses in Pakistan and the Gulf.
