Trump CIA pick Gina Haspel heads for confirmation amid resistance

Комитет Сената одобрил кандидатуру Джины Хэспел на пост главы ЦРУ

Veteran covert operative Gina Haspel was approved Wednesday to become director of the Central Intelligence Agency in a crucial Senate panel vote, despite her record of involvement in torture in the early 2000s, AFP reported. The Intelligence Committee voted 10-5 to forward her nomination to lead the U.S. spy agency to the entire Senate, virtually assuring final approval of her nomination.

Gina Haspel is a step closer to becoming the next CIA director after the US Senate Intelligence Committee voted to advance her nomination.

With a positive committee vote, the full Senate could vote on Haspel's confirmation as early as Thursday, according to Senate aides, although that would require cooperation from senators to waive the chamber's procedural hurdles for a quick vote. Haspel's letter went further than her remarks in her confirmation hearing last week, in which she refused to say whether the torture program was immoral.

The CIA's post-9/11 enhanced interrogation program that Haspel was involved with, as well as torture methods and waterboarding, have been contentious topics generally split along party lines.

"With the advantage of hindsight and my expertise as a senior company chief, the improved interrogation program just isn't one the Central Intelligence Agency ought to have undertaken", she wrote within the letter to Warner.

"Gina Haspel is the most qualified person the president could choose to lead the CIA and the most prepared nominee in the 70 year history of the agency", said Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C. She joined the CIA in 1985 and has held a series of high-ranking positions at the intelligence agency throughout her lengthy career, including senior leadership positions within the agency's National Clandestine Service, which oversees the agency's spy operations overseas and its most covert operations programs.

Haspel's letter came after Republican Sen.

Despite criticism of her nomination because of her past ties to the CIA's former rendition, detention and interrogation activities, Haspel is expected to be approved with the support of all eight committee Republicans and at least one of its seven Democrats. The day before Wednesday's committee vote, three of the Democrats said they'd back her shortly after she toughened her stance against harsh interrogation. Her nomination can now be considered by the full Senate.

Haspel said in her confirmation hearing that she would disobey any order from Trump to revive such techniques.

"Whereas I will not condemn people who made these laborious calls, and I've famous the precious intelligence collected, this system in the end did harm to our officers and our standing on the planet", Haspel continued.

'[I] t was a mistake not to brief the entire Committee at the beginning, ' she wrote. Her maneuvering with Warner came as the Trump administration worked overtime to attract support for her.

"Most importantly, I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the president if ordered to do something illegal or immoral - like a return to torture", he said.

"The United States must be an example to the rest of the world, and I support that", she said in her letter. "However, Ms. Haspel explained to me that the agency should not have employed such tactics in the past and has assured me that it will not do so in the future".

Trump has said the country should consider resuming harsh interrogation techniques.

Two Republicans, Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and John McCain of Arizona, are opposed to Haspel's nomination.

"Ms. Haspel's involvement in torture is deeply troubling, as my friend and colleague, John McCain, so eloquently reminded us". Jeff Flake of Arizona has raised concerns about the nominee.
