Trump Says He'll Pardon Dinesh D'Souza

James Comey, who Trump fired as FBI director a year ago and has repeatedly attacked, served as the lead federal prosecutor in Stewart's case. One Breitbart News story from 2015 compared his sentencing - he spent eight months in a halfway house and was required to attend counseling in lieu of jail - to Maoism. Blagojevich, a Democrat, was a former contestant on Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" reality TV show.

This is relevant because ex-wife also took issue with what she saw as D'Souza's two-faced handling of his conviction.

"I knew that causing a campaign contribution to be made in the name of another was wrong and something the law forbids", D'Souza had said at his plea hearing. He said D'Souza was treated very unfairly by the government.

Back in 2014, D'Souza plead guilty to using straw donors to make $20,000 in illegal campaign donations to a Republican candidate in a senate race.

He was sentenced to five years of probation.

White House spokesman Raj Shah echoed D'Souza's claim of selective prosecution. The FBI released a statement about the sentencing.

D'Souza is a former policy analyst under President Ronald Reagan and a prolific author well known for works critical of former President Barack Obama.

Preet Bharara, who brought charges against D'Souza when he was US Attorney for the Southern District of NY, asserted that there was no unfairness in the case. Most recently, he apologized for a tweet taunting survivors of the shooting in Parkland, Fla., after Florida lawmakers opted not to ban assault weapons. The career prosecutors and agents did their job.

This is Trump's fifth pardon. D'Souza is wildly popular among Christianists, despite having been caught committing adultery.

Trump has granted five pardons since taking office including one to Joe Arpaio, a Trump supporter who was convicted of contempt of court for racially profiling Hispanics while serving as a sheriff in Arizona.

This is not the first time experts say Trump's pardons appear to be symbolic warning shots at special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The remarkable thing about Trump's pardons is that a lot of them have been extremely political and either sent political messages or settled political scores.
