Two ruled out for Rafa Benitez's men

Benítez has a year left to run on his existing deal, and captain Lascelles believes keeping the manager on board should be the number one priority for the club.

"This group of players have done so well, so it would be easy to say, "Okay, well you are already in the top ten". Maybe they will help you attract a player who turns out to be a key player.

After the win against his former club, Benitez insisted that he wanted to carry on with the Magpies to build on their decent season.

"We're safe - we're more than safe, we're 10th, so the season has been really positive and I am looking forward to starting the new season". We have to start working on that - each one will be different.

"They went close this season, but Juventus are very strong and in order to beat them, you have to be close to perfection".

Newcastle issued a statement from owner Mike Ashley a couple of hours after the match. Gareth Southgate will name his England squad for the World Cup on May 16, and both he and Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles may feel they have an outside chance of being given a place on the plane to Russian Federation.

Ashley congratulated Benitez and his players for their achievements.

He has been an on-field leader at Newcastle for some time, with Rafa Benitez having passed him the armband, and while others may be keen to buy into his many qualities, the Nottingham Forest academy graduate is turning a deaf ear to the exit talk.

"Rafa, as always, has my full support, and contrary to some media reports that portray me as a pantomime villain, I will continue to ensure that every penny generated by the club is available to him".

"I can't thank Rafa enough for how much I've improved, not only as a player but as a captain".

But considering Chelsea's lack of form and Manchester United's seemingly impressive will of winning a silverware this season, it's probably fair to say that the Red Devils are easily the favourites in the Final.

"Newcastle showed great desire, a great will to fight, a great will to take three points and to finish this season in the best possible way".

"Now, we have to make sure that we do the right things and are on the same page".
