But ultimately, Adams said he was just doing his duty and was "glad to be able to assist".

United States Surgeon General Jerome Adams reportedly assisted flight attendants in a medical emergency on board a Delta flight Tuesday.

It wasn't clear what the emergency involved, but Adams said the patient is now doing well.

It was an awesome case of being in the right place at the right time, when the U.S. Surgeon General responded to calls for help aboard a Delta flight Wednesday evening.

Adams and the two nurses accompanied the patient to the gate, where the medics were waiting.

Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter said in an email statement that "Prior to takeoff, Delta flight 1827 from Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta returned to the gate following a customer illness". There is no word on what exactly caused the patient to lose consciousness or how he or she is now doing, but in Adams' tweet, he stated that the patient is doing well.

An anesthesiologist, Adams was previously Indiana's health commissioner, and in recent years is best known for his response to an HIV outbreak that left 181 people infected in a rural in county. Among the many things that the Surgeon General has been prioritizing since taking office is the ongoing opioid epidemic which continues to cause addiction, drug overdoses, and claim many lives.

Shortly after Dr. Adams posted the selfie, in which it appears he is still on board the plane, Delta replied - thanking him for volunteering, for his service, and for sharing the news.

The surgeon general has little power beyond the ability to call attention to serious public health problems and offer information and policy suggestions.
