A ‘Roseanne’ spinoff is happening - without Roseanne Barr

ABC to bring back ‘Roseanne’ without Barr after show’s star booted for racist tweet

The Roseanne spin-off will be moving forward at ABC - without original star Roseanne Barr.

After seemingly endless speculation about the future of a ROSEANNE show without star Roseanne Barr, ABC has made it official: a spinoff show now titled THE CONNERS has received a 10-episode order at the network, with Barr not returning.

The network has ordered 10 episodes, it announced on Thursday night, which will begin airing in fall during the same Tuesday at 8pm slot Roseanne would have occupied.

The rebooted version of Roseanne dominated the ratings upon its March premiere, but Barr was constantly going rogue on her personal Twitter - apparently retweeting conspiracy theories involving school shooting survivor David Hogg and attacking the likes of billionaire philanthropist George Soros and former first daughter Chelsea Clinton.

The network also included a statement from Barr: "I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from 'Roseanne, '" she said.

In a statement issued by the show's producer, Barr says she agreed to the settlement in order to save the jobs of 200 cast and crew members.

"We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today", the cast members said. ABC has described the synopsis for the spinoff so far as, "After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before".

The prolific comedian and actor found herself in hot water with ABC after she posted a racist tweet comparing former Obama aid Valerie Jarette to the offspring of the "Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes". The show's writers were just about to return to work on the second season. "The spinoff will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago", ABC said in a statement.

Kantar Media said Roseanne earned an estimated $45 million in advertising revenue for ABC through last season's nine-episode run. "We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter".

But Dungey, the first African American to ever serve as president of a USA broadcast network, in a statement announcing the show's cancellation said, "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values, and we have chose to cancel her show".

According to ABC News, Barr will have absolutely no role in the spinoff series despite the fact its based entirely off her long-running and beloved eponymous sitcom.
