Spotted by AppleInsider, the new rules say that "apps, including any third part advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining".

On Monday June 4, Apple expanded on those crypto-centric guidelines with several key inclusions into specific functionalities like wallet storage and mining for apps on its App Store platform.

Apple is cracking down on cryptocurrency activity on its devices.

Apple has updated its review guidelines to specifically prohibit iOS and Mac apps uploaded on the company's official App Store from utilizing users' devices for cryptocurrency mining operations. This step was taken by the firm considering the degradation of device performance and battery life due to mining as in the performance section of the guidelines Apple noted: "Apps should not rapidly drain battery, generate excessive heat, or put unnecessary strain on device resources".

For those interested in cryptocurrencies, don't expect to do any mining via apps installed on the iPhone. These conditions extend to apps providing cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading. The technology giant reversed its stance soon after, despite pulling moves like removing multi-cryptocurrency wallet Jaxx after its disapproval of Dash in 2016.

After the cryptominer was found to contain buggy code that made CPU usage on users devices spike, Apple pulled Calendar 2 from the macOS App Store. Apple allows apps like Coinbase and Robinhood to enable users to trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies, so it's not a complete ban on mobile crypto. In a dedicated cryptocurrency section, the company goes on to break down in more detail what is - and, crucially, is not - permissible.

Making its position clear " Purchasing and Currencies 11.17 Apps may facilitate transmission of approved virtual currencies provided that they do so in compliance with all state and federal laws for the territories in which the app functions".
