And he said of the actor, "it's Robert De Niro". What viewers at home didn't hear, was that De Niro dropped two F-bombs while hurling insults at President Trump.

Trump advisers also attacked the Canadian PM, branding him a back-stabber.

The "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" actor was in Canada for a groundbreaking for a new complex that will feature a Nobu restaurant, hotel and condos, according to the CBC.

The actor has been a vocal critic of Trump, twice declaring "f-- Trump" during the Tony Awards on Sunday night and receiving a standing ovation.

Social media quickly spread the word of what DeNiro had to say, which in some ways put the attention more on his comments than Springsteen's performance.

One user tweeted, "Waiting 4 Trump's 100 mega-ton verbal punchback/tirade vs Robert DeNiro". And then after the audience burst into laughter applause, he doubled down: "It's no longer 'down with Trump.' It's 'fuck Trump!'"

One of the indisputable highlights of the 72nd Tony Awards, which aired last night (June 10), was Bruce Springsteen's appearance on the show.

When asked about De Niro's remarks, Seawright said he probably would have chosen different words but seemed to praise De Niro for voicing people's "frustration". "Boy, do we need that now". But De Niro used the annual event honouring Broadway theatre's best to slam the controversial leader.

His comments were bleeped from the broadcast by CBS, which issued a statement saying: 'Mr. "I mean, if you're Donald Trump, it doesn't mean anything".

Kushner denounced Trump's presidency as "the Hitler mistake" that let a "borderline psychotic narcissist in the White House".

De Niro's negative opinions about Trump are nothing new.
