Dennis Rodman arrives in Singapore ahead of Trump-Kim summit

Trump-Kim summit could be one of many

"Despite his young age, he seems to be shrewd", he said, adding that he believes Kim realises his crusade to develop a nuclear arsenal to ensure his regime's survival has "hit a dead end" under intensifying sanctions.

Trump said "we've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Actually, says another group, there will indeed be disarmament, a peace treaty ending the Korean War and North Korea's emergence as a contributing member of the worldwide community - but just not right now.

In the English version, the summit is sold as a chance to realise "the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".

Pompeo said "any suggestion that the United States somehow lacks the technical expertise across government, or lacks it on the ground here in Singapore, is mistaken".

Earlier in May, North Korea, too, had threatened to cancel the meeting in protest against the joint military exercise the United States had conducted with South Korea.

White House officials have said Rodman will play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations. The session will be expanded to a bilateral meeting and will include advisors.

But on the eve of the summit, the White House unexpectedly announced Trump would depart Singapore by Tuesday evening, meaning his time with Kim would be fairly brief. Trump had previously said the talks might extend beyond the first day.

Asked how long it would take for him to work out if Kim was serious about striking some kind of peace deal, Trump replied: "I think within the first minute I'll know". Kim, the authoritarian, 30-something leader of the reclusive state of 25 million, is accused of having been involved in the assassination of his own half brother at a Malaysian airport two years ago.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the president was fully prepared for the meeting. He credits his administration's "maximum pressure" campaign with getting Kim to the table.

Kim had arrived hours earlier in a plane loaned by China, which for decades has been North Korea's only major ally. Kim's move was an encouraging sign, to be sure, but it was not an agreement on "denuclearization". In a video footage, Trump was seen leaving the Paya Lebar Air Base tarmac in the Presidential Beast, a vehicle that is flown around the globe for a US President's visits.

"We've had multiple deals with North Korea", said Green, who served as director of Asian affairs for the National Security Council under President George W. Bush.

The process could turn on what Trump is willing to offer Kim for ending his pursuit of nuclear weapons and submitting to intrusive inspections. Trump descended from Air Force One into the steamy Singapore night, greeting officials and declaring he felt "very good" before being whisked away to his hotel via a route lined with police and photo-snapping onlookers.

North Korea is different, mysterious, unknown. As the site for their meeting, the two leaders have chosen one of Singapore's most luxurious hotels, the Capella Resort on Sentosa Island, a popular vacation spot off the southern tip of Singapore and home to Universal Studios Singapore.
