A dog traveling from Phoenix to Newark on Delta Air Lines died in his crate on a layover in Detroit earlier this week, the latest deadly incident involving pets and planes.

According to CNN, the dogs owners Michael Dellegrazie and his girlfriend chose to put their eight-year-old Pomeranian Alejandro with cargo. When the plane landed there, the 8-year-old Alejandro was still alive. The cause of death is still unknown.

"When he landed here in MI, he was alive at 6:30 a.m., and then at 8:20, he wasn't moving and it just doesn't make any sense to me", the dog's owner, Michael Dellagrazie said in an interview with WDIV-TV, referring to his Pomeranian, Alejandro.

"To say they are distraught would be a gross understatement", the family's attorney, Evan Oshan, told WXYZ. Oshan said the family is "devastated" over the incident. "He's a member of our family".

In a statement to ABC News, Delta said, "We know pets are an important member of the family and we are focused on the well-being of all animals we transport".

Delta said it's investigating the situation and has been working with Dellegrazie to support him.

"As part of that review, Delta offered to have Alejandro evaluated by a veterinarian while in our possession to find out more about why this may have occurred".

Alejandro was found dead on a layover in Detroit in the space of a half-hour.

In March, a French bulldog called Kokito died on a United Airlines flight from Houston to NY after a flight attendant told the owner to put the dog, which was in a carrier, in the overhead locker.

The dog was being held in a cargo facility at the time, CNN reports.

He and his girlfriend were joint owners of the Pomeranian, and are deeply upset by the situation, not to mention Delta Airlines' handling of their beloved pet. Pets traveling in the airplane cabin are meant to be stowed under the seat in front of the owner.

The next day, a 10-year-old German Shepherd called Irgo was flown to Japan when he should have been travelling to Kansas. The flight was going from Newark to St. Louis, but the pet was due to fly from New Jersey to Akron.
