Donovan Survives GOP Primary Challenge From Ex-Convict Grimm

Trump claims Dems want to ‘let MS-13 all over our country

McMaster's likely victory - he led businessman John Warren by an eight-point margin with 85% of the vote counted - again demonstrated the president's influence over Republican voters, five months before the November 6 elections that will determine whether Republicans maintain control of both houses of the US Congress as well as numerous gubernatorial seats.

Trump took to Twitter to offer his congratulations for Donovan's "tremendous win".

Grimm served more than seven months in prison after pleading guilty in 2014 to cheating the government out of taxes at his Manhattan restaurant.

Donovan's win will likely prompt sighs of relief from Republican operatives who anxious about how Grimm's checkered past would have impacted the party's chances in November.

Donovan, a former district attorney, defended his record and urged voters not to trust Grimm.

As the incumbent, Donovan had the backing of virtually the entire state GOP establishment while he sought to hang Grimm's tax-fraud conviction around his neck as proof he both can't be trusted and would be a risk in the general election. "My opponent says he supports the president, but didn't say anything to support the president during the presidential election". With the camera rolling, Grimm threatened to "break [Scotto] in half" and throw him over the balcony in the House office building where they stood.

Democrats need to flip 23 of 435 seats to take over the House of Representatives, which would stymie much of Trump's agenda while opening up new avenues of investigation into his administration.

Whoever survives the donnybrook between Grimm and Donovan will face one of six Democratic candidates in November.

Grimm held a consistent lead in the few polls conducted on the race.

The GOP primary for the Staten Island-area district quickly turned into one of the more brutal - and intriguing - races in the nation this cycle.

Voters also trimmed crowded fields of Democrats hoping to challenge several incumbent Republicans, including U.S. Rep. John Faso, who represents a battleground district in the Hudson Valley and Catskills regions.
