Taliban Attacks Afghan Forces in Kunduz 15 Killed

Hours before yesterday's announcement, Taleban militants stormed an Afghan military base in the western province of Herat, killing at least 17 soldiers, officials said.

U.S. forces in Afghanistan confirmed Thursday they would respect the Afghan government's ceasefire with the Taliban, with Gen. John Nicholson, commander of USA and worldwide forces in Afghanistan, describing it as "another bold initiative for peace". They say the ceasefire doesn't apply to foreign forces, and warned they would defend themselves if attacked.

The European Union ambassador to Kabul Pierre Mayaudon on Sunday said they are hopeful that the ceasefires announced by the Afghan government and Taliban lead to real peace talks.

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of the holy month of Ramadan and begins June 16.

"The Taliban confiscated weapons following the attack", Sarwari told AFP.

Afghanistan has suffered a recent uptick in violence despite reports in March that suggested some factions of the Taliban had expressed interest in pursuing peace talks with the Afghan government.

Afghanistan faces insurgencies by the Taliban, Islamic State and the Taliban-linked Haqqani network. He said, "People and valiant armed forces of Pakistan have paid a heavy price four peace as over 70,000 soldiers and civilians have been martyred and wounded since the 9/11".

The unprecedented step from the insurgent group, which has been fighting foreign troops and their local allies since 2001, comes two days after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani declared a weeklong cease-fire beginning Tuesday.

"The Helmand Peace March is the most significant grass-roots peace effort to emerge from Taliban-held areas, a desperate cry for peace in a region ravaged by conflict", Shuja said.

Elsewhere in Ghazni, at least three local police and 10 Taliban fighters were killed in clashes, Noori said.

Jarett Blanc, a former U.S. diplomat who was involved in earlier efforts to start a peace process with the Taliban, said the cease-fire provides an opportunity for both sides to demonstrate control over their armed forces.

No one immediately claimed the attack in Kot district, but both the Taliban and IS are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially in Nangarhar.

The nascent talks were dealt a fatal blow when his successor Mullah Mansur was killed in a USA drone strike in Balochistan a few months later.

There also are concerns that the Taliban's brutal arm the Haqqani Network, suspected of being behind numerous recent attacks in Kabul claimed by IS, could launch more assaults on behalf of the rival group.

"Three days is a lot of time, even if we have peace for one hour in the country, we would be very happy", said Kunduz resident Bashir.
