Dwane Casey is starting from scratch again

Casey has agreed to a five-year deal with the team.

In a series of ESPN interviews late last week in conjunction with the N.B.A. finals, Casey spoke optimistically of the Pistons' job and potentially working with the Detroit frontcourt stars Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond.

Casey's Raptors teams were the winningest in franchise history, as the 2017-18 group broke the franchise record for regular-season victories (set in 2015-16) with 59. His departure from Toronto was a hard decision for Raptors president Masai Ujiri, and Casey being favored for a new role quickly is hardly surprising, although he could have stayed at home earning $6.5 million and waiting for another opportunity next summer.

Some Detroit Pistons fans have been very critical of Tom Gores for taking so long to find a head coach and general manager.

According to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, Casey will meet with players in Los Angeles, where most the players are working out and training.

Casey is well-respected by players across the league, but was this the correct hire by Gores and the Pistons?

The 61-year-old coach has also been swept out of the last two postseasons by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but will now have the chance to work with a different roster, assembling the pieces left in place by former boss Stan Van Gundy.

Casey, who is from Morganfield, Kentucky, played for the Wildcats and helped them win the 1978 NCAA title and began his coaching career the next year as a graduate assistant under Joe B. Hall. "As a team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next level".
