French Farmers Plan to Blockade Total Refineries and Fuel Depots

Trade unions and farmer groups in France are blocking today a total of 14 refineries and fuel tanks across the country in protest against government policy in the sector, which they consider "incoherent".

The protests are a sign of growing anger in France's farming communities which have so far not mobilised in large numbers against the government of President Emmanuel Macron since his election.

The French farmers' blockades at oil refineries to oppose the government approval of Total's use of imported palm oil at a biofuel plant was "illegal", said Agriculture Minister Stephane Travert.

Farmers in France have blocked access to several oil depots and refineries in protest - that is organized to last three days - against the proposed use of imported palm oil at a Total biofuel plant.

French oil and gas major Total, which operates five refineries and nine petrol depots in France, said late on Sunday that farmers have gathered at two depots and it had taken measures together with authorities, to limit disruptions.

The move came after the French energy giant Total made a decision to use a cheaper, imported palm oil at its biofuel plant.

According to Deutsche Welle, they are also anxious about emerging competition, as local biofuel producers might want to go over to a cheaper palm oil from overseas instead of buying locally produced and more expensive rapeseed oil. Palm oil is cheaper than rapeseed oil.

"Our target is the state", FNSEA's Lambert said, adding Total's decision on palm oil was "the last straw".

The move is aimed at reducing the use of palm oil blamed for causing deforestation in southeast Asia, he said.

Fuel shortages were not expected as a result of the blockade, given France's network of emergency fuel reserves and in the absence of sympathy action by fuel sector workers.

Small farmers in Malaysia, the world's second largest palm oil producer after Indonesia, said a move to cap palm oil exports at an European Union level would be discriminatory and a "betrayal".
