France warns Trump over 'fits of anger' after G7 statement u-turn

President Donald Trump went on a Twitterstorm after his arrival in Singapore bashing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, kvetching about how much the United States pays towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and calling out Germany for not paying its fair share.

Tusk was referencing a comment made by Trump aide Peter Navarro, who shocked even the US President's Republican colleagues when he called Trudeau a backstabber - over the issue of trade tariffs - and verbally consigned him to "hell" after a G7 meet in Canada over the weekend. Highlighting that the document is still "legally-binding" as far as Germany is concerned, Merkel said she would uphold it but her patience after Trump's about-face had worn thin.

In a tweet posted Saturday evening, Trump said his decision was based on "false statements" made by Trudeau during a press conference he gave, as well as "the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs" on us companies.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door".

The prime minister also said Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that Americans have unjustly applied to us". "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!"

"There are always irritants in relationships", Pompeo said, adding that without partners like Canada, "we wouldn't be in this place, we wouldn't have this diplomatic opportunity" with the North.

Officially, the Trump administration used national security grounds to justify the tariffs, but Trump's clash with Canada may have more to do with a perceived personal slight than the facts of the bilateral relationship.

Merkel said that "taking it back by tweet was of course sobering and also a little depressing".

"Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?" he tweeted.

"That's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference". "Canada, thank you for the flawless organisation of G7!", he said further, about the meet hosted by Trudeau in Quebec. "We'll either leave it the way it is as a threesome deal" and "change it very substantially", Trump said Saturday in La Malbaie, Quebec, speaking to reporters before departing the Group of Seven leaders' meeting. Japan had already been subject to the levies as part of Trump's "America First" policies.

Trump's renewed comments on trade come amid a growing dispute between Washington and its top allies.

"The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before-both in public, and in private conversations with the president", Trudeau's office announced in a statement, according to Reuters.

"There are still good reasons to continue our fight [aimed at keeping close transatlantic partnership], even though we can not just rely on it anymore", she added.

Germany also said it will stand by the jointly agreed communique.

"We spend two days working out a [joint] statement and commitments".
