Florida homeowners warned over alligators two days before woman killed

Search teams discovered the body of Shizuka Matsuki about 10 p.m. Friday in a lake at the Silver LakesRotary Nature Park, said Rob Klepper, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported a passerby saw a woman with two dogs near the lake and then a short time later saw the dogs barking at the water's edge but the woman was not there.

A 12-foot alligator was removed from a lake at the Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park in Davie, Florida, after a woman went missing.

Fatal attacks on humans remain rare, however.

Her body was found in the lake hours later.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Isla del Sol Homeowners Association sent an email to its residents shortly after the six-foot gator was trapped.

One of the dogs was found with a fresh wound, but Matsuki was missing.

The warning came just after a 6-foot alligator was found near a resident's front door.

A witness had told police on Friday she saw Matsuki walking her dogs in one moment, but looked back to find the woman gone and her pets still there.

The organisation also tweeted to say it would be conducting a "thorough investigation" into the incident, adding: "We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Shizuka Matsuki".

Jeff Polhman, Davie's Assistant Director of Parks, said to the newspaper that trappers had been hired within the last 18-24 months in a bid to capture the alligator, but they had not had any success.

It is not known if Matsuki received the warning.

"He had warned her not to take the dogs over to that place because they had seen gators before and it isn't safe", Limia said, relaying what he had heard from other neighbors.

Florida wildlife officials have logged 401 "unprovoked bite incidents" from 1948 to 2017, according to a fact sheet published in 2017.
