Instagram adds group video chat and redesigned explore tab

All you need to do is go into your inbox, tap on the camera icon, and the call will alert your friends' phones. The video chat feature has started rolling out in the Instagram mobile apps.

For Instagram, the redesigned Explore page and video calling on Direct will be crucial. Also, if there is an active video chat in a group thread, the camera icon will turn blue. While on the video chat, you can minimise the video and multitask on Instagram, such as sending messages and images in Direct, browsing your feed, posting a story, and more. As a group call takes place, more people can join (until you reach the maximum of four participants).

The functionality will also only work with people that you have an existing Direct thread with, meaning that you won't be able to start communication with a video call.

The magnifying glass icon at the bottom of your screen will no longer lead to just a search bar, stories, and media you might like. You can have a face-to-face chat with a single individual, or participate in a group chat. If you'd rather not receive notifications from a certain person, you can tap on their name at the top of your Direct message thread to mute them. To update your video chat notifications, tap the gear icon on profile and find the new video chat control in Push Notifications. Other topic channels that you'll find include Art, Sports, Beauty, Animals and more. The Explore page will now be segmented to show a variety of topic channels that reveal associated content below. Users can swipe between the categories to browse, and then scroll up to view more posts from any they enjoy. Ariana Grande, Buzzfeed, Liza Koshy, Baby Ariel and National Basketball Association collaborated with the company on the new video filters. You can also "Mute" any channel to send it to the end of the list. If you aren't a follower but you see an effect that you love, you can tap to try it on and add it to your camera. So for example, after following Liza Koshy, there will be a new camera effect that places a mustache and thick eyebrows on you. "Whether you want to make your friends laugh or add some glam to your selfies, you now have more ways to express yourself and feel closer to your favorite accounts".
