US suicide rate on rise: health agency

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released figures Thursday on suicide rates across the U.S. According to the report, the suicide rate in Minnesota jumped 40.6 percent over 18 years. "Every step feels like it's an uphill stretch, but you just keep going and keep going and eventually you get to that summit, and the view when you get there is just spectacular", he said. In 2010, there were 606. They were the source of about half of all suicides, the researchers say, and that percentage has stayed stable over the years.

Among decedents aged 18 years or older, 20.1% of those without known mental health conditions and 15.3% of those with had served in the United States military.

"Suicide rates have increased by 30%", said Warden.

Suicide by stateThe study also broke down the data by state and found suicide rates varied widely.

- A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a troubling rise in the nation's suicide rates.

MA experienced a 35 percent increase in suicides from 1999 to 2016, but its suicide rate remains comparatively low: 10 per 100,000 people in 2014-2016, compared with 15.4 per 100,000 for the nation as a whole. According to the data, almost 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide in 2016, making it the 10 leading cause of death. In 1999, then-Surgeon General David Satcher issued a report on the state of mental health in the country and called suicide "a significant public health problem".

Research consistently points to a strong association between firearm access and suicide deaths.

Twenty-five states had suicide rates that increased more than 30 percent, and the highest increase was seen in North Dakota at 57.6 percent.

Firearms were the most commonly reported method of suicides (48.5%), though decedents with known mental health conditions were less likely to die by firearm (40.6%) and more likely to use strangulation (31.3%) or poisoning (19.8%) than those without (26.9% and 10.4%, respectively). They were also more likely to commit a homicide followed by suicide (aOR = 2.9, 95% CI = 2.2-3.8) than the latter group.

This recommendation, however, is only really useful if suicide is a generally predictable phenomenon. In the 27 states that use the National Violent Death Reporting System, 54 percent of suicides were by people without a known mental illness.

"The reason most suicide decedents don't have a known mental disorder is that they were never diagnosed, not that they didn't have one", said Dr. David Brent, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburg.

"We know that prevention programs work and can be effective in reducing this tragedy", Shuchat said. The most important takeaway, mental health professionals say, is that suicide is an issue not only for the mentally ill but for anyone struggling with serious lifestyle problems. "We want improved access to care and better diagnostics, but we think that a comprehensive approach to suicide is what is needed".

This report contains information from the Associated Press.

This is part of its larger call on entire communities - beginning at the family level and expanding all the way up to society as a whole - to come together to watch out for suicidal behavior and make help more accessible.
