Jimmy Fallon got criticism after Trump won the election

Fallon recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he "made a mistake" when he mussed up Trump's hair on the September 15, 2016, episode and said he would do it differently. The interaction spurred a big backlash against Fallon for what some saw as a light-hearted "normalising" of Trump's out-of-the-mainstream policy agenda at a crucial point of the presidential campaign. He called & said 'monster ratings.' Be a man Jimmy!' You made me feel bad. He insisted that "looking back, I would do it differently".

Time will tell if Fallon takes this opportunity to get even more political on his show, but we suspect he won't.

Later in the show, he delved a little further into what Donald Trump said exactly in his tweet, taking particular issue with Trump's claim that Fallon called him to tout the "monster ratings" of Trump's appearance on the show.

Jimmy Fallon is giving a full response to Donald Trump's tweets about him.

"As you may have heard, last night, the President of the United States went after me on Twitter", Fallon said to the audience. "As you may have heard, last night, the president of the United States went after me on Twitter, so Melania, if you're watching, I don't think your anti bullying campaign is working", Fallon said on his show. "Then I thought, "Wait-shouldn't he have more important things to do?'" I don't want to make anyone angry - I never do and I never will. And he's apologizing because he "humanized" me, and he really hurt himself, ' Trump said during the rally to support South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster for re-election. "I'm depressed. ... What do you want me to do?..." Be a man Jimmy!' he said in a Trump-esque voice while showing the graphic of the actual tweet.

Jimmy Fallon's monologue from Monday, June 25.

"'You know the grind and you know me".

Commenting that it was "definitely a down time", Fallon said he'd received the public's message of disappointment loud and clear - and that if he could do things differently, he would. And I can laugh at myself. "He's lost, he looks like a lost soul".

Fallon tweeted back to say he was making a donation in Trump's name to a non-profit group that provides legal assistance to immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas.
