John Bolton Visits Moscow To Talk Possible Trump-Putin Meeting

Moscow and Washington have reportedly agreed to hold a summit between President Trump and Vladimir Putin, according to Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov.

President Putin said his meeting with Mr Bolton had raised hopes for a full restoration of relations, which he admitted were not in the best of shape.

"Right now I'm an adviser to President Trump, it's his agenda we're pursuing", Bolton told reporters. "It has enormous importance for Russian Federation and America, but it [also] has huge importance for the whole global situation. It's something that I think both feel will contribute to improvements in the US-Russia bilateral relationship and in stability around the world", he added.

Hardliner John Bolton is in Moscow to lay the groundwork for a summit between the Kremlin chief and Mr. Trump that may take place next month in Europe.

Bolton said he would talk about "how to improve Russia-U.S. relations and find areas where we can agree and make progress together". After those talks, Trump said he believed Putin's denials Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 USA presidential election - remarks Trump later backed away from.

Anticipation has been high for a possible Trump-Putin meeting as Trump seeks to mend strained relations with Russian Federation.

Trump listed Syria and Ukraine among the many subjects he said they would discuss.

The long-anticipated Trump-Putin summit is now official. "Russia never sought confrontation".

The last, brief meeting between Putin and Trump took place in November 2017 in Vietnam during an APEC summit.

"It was stated clearly by our side that the Russian state hasn't interfered with the US domestic politics, moreover hasn't interfered in the 2016 election", Ushakov said.

"Even in earlier days, when our countries had differences, our leaders and their advisers met", he said.

In Moscow, Bolton told a news conference that the idea that a summit would prove some kind of "nexus between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin" would be "complete nonsense".

Britain which sparked big diplomatic expulsions in both countries.

Expectations for a summit are therefore low, even though Trump said before he was elected that he wanted to improve battered U.S. -Russia ties.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to the media at the Department of State in Washington last week. Subsequent sanctions have punished Moscow for what Washington has called its malign behaviour and alleged meddling in USA politics.
