KFC to test vegetarian fried chicken

The chicken chain also plans to introduce a variety of meals under 600 calories by 2020.

The vegetarian option is believed to be the first time a major fast-food chain is putting fake chicken on the menu.

This week, the chicken-life "vegetarian options" were announced for British KFC locations.

The company says the new item is in line with its United Kingdom commitment to reduce calories per serving by 20% by 2025.

The meat-free creation would still use the same blend of 11 spices as its real chicken, but the company would not specify what else would go into it.

For those anxious about losing the authenticity and tradition of KFC's iconic eleven herbs and spices, the chain promises that the same spice mix used to compliment its regular fried chicken variety will be preserved in the new menu item. The company said the new recipe will be tested on customers this year and if successful, it will be introduced by 2019.

Meanwhile, KFC's US team has indicated to Foodbeast that the vegetarian option won't be introduced in the country and there are "no plans related to the U.K.'s test at this time".

"The development of the recipe is still in its very early stages and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret".

Victoria Robertson, a nutritionist, and head of food innovation of KFC UK and Ireland explained that KFC recognized how people are becoming more passionate about healthy eating habits.

"This is about providing choice, and offering delicious, signature KFC taste that just happens to be lighter".

USA customers may have to wait a bit longer. "We're talking about millions of people dramatically changing their diets".

It suggested that food chains change the recipe of their products, reduce the portion size, and encourage their customers to opt for lower calorie products.
