The two leaders have a rare chance tomorrow to settle this 65-year stalemate once and for all.

The United States and North Korea have been in a technical state of war for decades after the eruption of the 1950-1953 Korean War, which pitted U.S. -led U.N. troops backing Seoul against Pyongyang's forces that were aided by China.

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said.

Another possibility from the summit is a deal to end the Korean War, which North Korea has long demanded, presumably, in part, to get U.S. troops off the Korean Peninsula and, eventually, pave the way for a North Korean-led unified Korea.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous USA administrations have failed to do. Calling his trip "a mission of peace", the US President framed the meeting as a rare opportunity for Kim and said the US was going in with a positive outlook.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said United States and North Korean officials would hold working-level talks on Monday.

Trump is set to meet Kim in Singapore on Tuesday, a first-ever meeting between sitting North Korean and USA leaders and one focused on Pyongyang's ominous nuclear weapons program.

Trump has said he believes Kim is committed to denuclearization and that Kim "wants to do something great for his people".

His tweet came after the White House Thursday ruled out any role for the high-profile retired player in the hotly-anticipated talks with the North Korean leader, with whom Rodman has struck up an unlikely friendship.

Singapore has diplomatic relations with both North Korea and the US.

Authorities imposed tight security around the summit venue and related luxury hotels - including installing extra pot plants outside Kim's expected accommodation to obstruct reporters' views.

Kim arrived on an Air China jet, NPR's Elise Hu reports. He has not left his country since taking office in 2011 other than to visit China and the South Korean side of the border Demilitarised Zone.

North Korea dismantles its nuclear testing ground in front of foreign journalists, but Trump announces hours later that he's pulling out of the summit, citing the North's "tremendous anger and open hostility".

Part of the interest in Tuesday's summit is simply because Kim has had limited appearances on the world stage.

The bodyguards made headlines in April when video emerged of them sprinting next to the leader's auto during a landmark meeting with South Korea. Domestically, in a totalitarian country as closed and controlled as North Korea, the people will be carefully fed with what the regime wants. He called for North Korea to follow a "Libya model" in negotiations. Moon says Kim reaffirmed his commitment to denuclearize their peninsula but also said he was unsure whether he could trust the United States to provide a credible security guarantee in return.

Some critics have said the summit is being rushed through, with Trump keen to chalk up his first major foreign policy achievement. "That includes inspecting the North Korean nuclear shutdown, as well as a role in the economic development Kim is seeking for his country". But the president also tempered summit expectations by saying the Singapore meeting will likely be the beginning of a longer process.

May 24: A senior North Korean diplomat calls US Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" for his comments on the North and says it is up to the Americans whether they "meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at (a) nuclear-to-nuclear showdown".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting.

The summit comes after months of speculation and disputes between Washington and Pyongyang that led Trump to briefly cancel the June 12 meeting on May 24.
