Under his guidance, Die Mannschaft have won the 2014 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup. Shin, who had given South Korea a one per cent chance of victory before the game, said: "I feel great, but at the same time, I feel a little bit empty, so I feel a little ambivalent".

If Sweden draw or win against Mexico, Germany must match or better Sweden's result to progress.

"I have to say that we qualified because we beat Germany and Korea, but nevertheless I am very hurt", coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.

Korea finished third in Group F, and Germany left the World Cup in last place in the group.

In this picture, Low of Germany looks on prior to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group F match between Korea Republic and Germany at Kazan Arena in Kazan, Russia, June 27, 2018. "The team worked well, players were training really well but the two friendly matches, against Austria and Saudi Arabia, were not good".

And having committed men forward in an increasingly desperate search for the three points - just one goal would have sufficed with Sweden beating Mexico 3-0 - they were inevitably caught late on with Kim Young-Gwon scoring in the 92nd minute.

Goretza nearly put Germany in front two minutes after the restart but was thwarted by a superb stop from Jo Hyeon-Woo - and then news filtered through of Ludwig Augustinsson's opener for Sweden. Germany simply needed a one-goal win to advance given what would have been their superior goal differential.

Defending champion Germany was sent crashing out of the World Cup after suffering a stunning 2-0 defeat by a tenacious South Korea that saw it eliminated in the first round for the first time in 80 years.

"Overall, we can't be satisfied because we're not in the knockout stage", Kim said.

"We had a lot of chances, even me I should have scored in the 87th (minute). We need to talk about it calmly and I think it will take some hours for us to come to terms with it".

Sweden and Germany both had three points, and South Korea had zero.

On social media, fans depicted Kim in the style of a Mexican saint, created mashups of the South Korean and Mexican flags and digitally added the Korean flag to El Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City.

That win not only kept Germany alive, it put them in the driver's seat to qualify for the round of 16.

Joshua Kimmich's deliveries from the right were not up to the standard of his Bayern Munich form, but then the movement in the middle was far too laboured to give him much of a target to aim for as Timo Werner and Marco Reus ended up swapping and changing positions in a bid to make something happen.

But should we be surprised at Germany's exit from the competition at such an early stage?
