President Xi Jinping on Friday awarded China's first friendship medal to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as the two leaders firmed up their alliance amid mounting U.S. diplomatic and economic pressure on them.

In a combined effort, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau failed recently to convince Trump not to impose tariffs on the allies.

"I can confirm that President Trump voiced concern about a new round of arms race in our latest call", Putin said.

"For Putin, this is return on his investment, and it's safe to say that his investment has paid off beyond even his wildest dreams".

Lavrov said Russian Federation is "working fine in other formats" such as the Group of 20, TASS state news agency reported.

Last month, Trump pulled out of former USA president Barack Obama's landmark 2015 nuclear accord with Iran over the objections of European allies and other nations.

"Canada's position is absolutely clear that there are no grounds whatsoever with its current behaviour to let Russia back into the G7", Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters as she listed Russia's annexation of the Crimea peninsula, interference in democratic elections and the poison-gas attack on a former Russian double agent and his daughter in Britain. Trump has said he was open to having a summit with Putin, who US intelligence officials have said directed Russian meddling in the 2016 election to help Trump win.

Putin noted that Russian Federation and China have emphasized the need for talks to reduce tensions.

He said that the U.S. exit from the nuclear deal warrants an "important and serious discussion between our two countries".

Meanwhile, in Canada, a growing rift between the United States and its most important allies was on full display.

Russian state news agency Tass reports that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a press conference that the two leaders discussed the possibility of a bilateral summit, including possible locations, during a recent phone call. However, having pulled out of the deal, the USA now says it will impose severe economic and trade sanctions on Iran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, whose country is an observer member of the SCO, will also attend the summit at a time when China and Russian Federation are seeking to save the Iran nuclear deal following Trump's withdrawal from the pact.

"Both share scepticism towards American hegemony and distrust USA intentions, both are authoritarian personalistic rulers", he said.

Trump's rejection of the global climate accord and Iran nuclear deal, supported by the European Union and Canada is going to be another flashpoint in the increasingly acrimonious relationship between Washington and its Western allies.
