Volcano burn victims from Guatemala arrive in US for treatment

The search for survivors from deadly eruptions of Guatemala's Fuego volcano was temporarily suspended on Thursday due to unsafe conditions for rescue workers, as the death toll from the disaster reached 100, authorities said.

"The conditions are critical in the areas near Fuego volcano", said Eddy Sanchez, Director of the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology, adding that initial eruption was the most violent explosion since 1974.

Satellite pictures published on Wednesday showed a lava- and ash-ravaged landscape in southern Guatemala after Fuego volcano's calamitous eruption, which has killed at least 99 people.

Rescue brigades continue to search for victims amid the tons of ash and sand after Fuego's eruption, the most powerful in more than four decades.

Sunday's eruption sent fast-moving flows of superheated material and debris cascading down the mountain's flank and through small villages. In the murk created by the dust, police were using red ink to mark homes that had already been searched for bodies.

Rainfall is complicating efforts to recover bodies in villages devastated by the eruption of Guatemala's Volcano of Fire, and some locals say many remains will never be removed. Right? But we didn't do it to them, and these kids need help. They have not been heard from since the eruption.

The children died in the town of San Miguel Los Lotes. "And if heavy machinery comes in they will be torn apart".

"My father, my mother, my sisters are there", she said, upset over rescuers' decision to suspend their search.

In his words: "Nobody is going to be able to get them out nor say how many are buried here". "They did not care and they did not take precautions".

Late Wednesday a U.S. Air Force C-17 carried six Guatemalan children who were badly burned for treatment at the Shriner's Hospital in Galveston, Texas.

Fuego, or "Fire" in Spanish, lies about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of the capital, Guatemala City, near the picturesque colonial city of Antigua, a UNESCO world heritage site. Officials said more pyroclastic flow is expected in the upcoming days.
