Israel will coordinate further needs with Guatemalan authorities, he said.

A deadly pyroclastic flow - which can travel down a mountain at speeds of more than 100km/h - shot from the volcano and is likely the cause of most deaths, volcanologist David Rothery told Al Jazeera.

There is no electricity in the hardest hit areas of Los Lotes and El Rodeo, so most searching continued only until sunset.

Guatemala's disaster agency has raised the death toll from the eruption of the Volcano of Fire to 65.

The Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare, Carlos Enrique Soto, commented that at nightfall 15 people had been victims of burns by lava.

A volcanic eruption in Guatemala that spewed out ashy plumes and scorching-hot lava on Sunday (June 3) has killed at least 33 people, according to news reports.

"Currently the volcano continues to erupt and there exists a high potential for (pyroclastic) avalanches of debris", the disaster agency said late Sunday via Twitter, quoting Sanchez, the director of the seismology and volcanology institute.

Few of the bodies have yet been identified because the intense heat left them unrecognizable.

A Monday photo shows ongoing volcanic activity at Fuego.

An AFP journalist saw at least three bodies burned in the rubble of the village of San Miguel Los Lotes, where rescue workers, soldiers and police were desperately searching for survivors.

Using shovels and backhoes, emergency workers dug through the debris and mud, perilous labor on smoldering terrain still hot enough to melt shoe soles a day after the volcano exploded in a hail of ash, smoke and molten rock.

Among the fatalities were four people, including a disaster agency official, killed when lava set a house on fire in El Rodeo, National Disaster Co-ordinator Sergio Cabanas said.

Hundreds have been injured, and thousands of people have fled to temporary shelters. A relief donation collection centre has also been opened in Guatemala City.

Volcanic ash covers parked motorcycles, brought by the Fuego Volcano, in Antigua Guatemala.

One video published by news outlet Telediario, purportedly taken in the El Rodeo village, showed three bodies strewn atop the remnants of the flow as rescuers arrived to attend to an elderly man caked from head to toe in ash and mud.

Some residents said they never learned of the danger until it was upon them - and were critical of authorities.

"We hope it will not mean a secondary disaster", he said.

"It is very hard for us to identify them because some of the dead lost their features or their fingerprints" from the red-hot flows, Garcia said.

People have been evacuated from several areas and the capital's La Aurora airport has closed.

The White House said in a statement that it was also dispatching aircraft to transport burn victims for treatment in Florida.

Volcán de Fuego is one of many volcanoes that are active in Central America.
