Merkel expects a 'difficult' G7 meeting

Dialogue with Rome but respect EU rules (3)

Germany will talk to the new Italian government but will stress that everyone has to respect European Union rules, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.

In addition to the disruptive effects of the rift in NATO and Trump's exit from the Paris global climate treaty, Merkel pointed to the fresh conflict over trade and the USA leader's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear accord last month.

Mrs Merkel will now face questions three times a year, though some opposition MPs complained that the format is too inflexible. "This format, which is aimed at the observance of global law, is now impossible for Russia", Merkel said.

She said Germany will work at least to preserve what was agreed at last year's G7 and G20 summits on trade and climate.

German chancellors haven't previously interacted directly with lawmakers in the same way British prime ministers do at their weekly question time.

Merkel vowed to enter the talks "in good faith" but stressed that there must be "no compromise for its own sake" and that a final statement by the host Canada, rather than a joint communique, "may be the more honest way".

Merkel told the German Bundestag (German parliament) on Wednesday that there is a serious problem with multilateral agreements and that is why there will be controversies, particularly on worldwide trade, climate protection and development policies.

There were few personal attacks during the session, which addressed issues ranging from diesel emissions to the number of women in parliament. Merkel, fielding another question from the far-right, anti-immigrant AfD, was accused of "importing Islamists", many of whom are "rapists and murderers" who have caused "endless human suffering".

"When will you resign?" he asked.

Merkel replied that the influx that began in 2015 is "an exceptional humanitarian situation, [and that] Germany behaved very responsibly". But "I'll come back".
